When you first move into a new area, working out what public transport options are available, where the nearest bus stop is, or what discounts are available can be the last thing on your mind. We’ve put all the information you may require below, click on each section to find out more. Also, to the right, you will find a list of useful links for public transport operators in the area and travel planners.
Melbourn is well connected to surrounding areas by bus with route 26 through the village opperated by A2B Travel Group. You’ll find services running along High Street from your nearest bus stops, located near the Dolphin pub or further up the High Street by the Premier Convenience Store. All bus stops are less than a 15-minute walk from Kingley Grove. Royston and Cambridge are easily accessible by bus from these stops. Contactless payments are accepted by A2B Travel Group.
Furthermore, there is a Cambridge Area Bus Users group which seeks to represent and campaign on behalf of bus users throughout the county. Find out more information here.
In addition to these local bus services, there are also regular National Express coach services departing from Cambridge and Trumpington Park & Ride. The coach is usually a cheaper alternative to the train. Find out more on the National Express website.
There are incentives throughout Cambridgeshire to promote travelling by public transport including free bus passes; for those of state pension age, or with an eligible disability, you are entitled to a bus pass that allows free off-peak travel on local buses anywhere in England. In Cambridgeshire, this means free travel Mondays to Fridays after 9.30am until the last bus and all day on weekends and bank holidays. To apply for a free bus pass visit the Buses section on the Cambridgeshire County Council website or call 0345 045 1367 alternatively, you can also receive free help at your local library.
If you’re travelling into Cambridge, why not try out Park and Ride services? Park and Ride offers a sustainable way to travel, making it easy to park your car and enjoy a relaxed journey into town using dedicated bus lanes that bypass the congestion. Cambridge’s Trumpington Park-and-Ride (Sat Nav: CB2 9FT) is located by the M11 at the end of the A10, and it takes only 24 and 37 minutes to reach by car and cycle respectively, making it a very convenient transport hub for residents of Kingley Grove travelling into Cambridge. Services operate every ten minutes Monday to Saturday. Trumpington Park-and-Ride also has a fast guided Busway route to Addenbrooke’s and Cambridge train station and if you commute regularly, you can benefit from weekly, monthly or annual tickets!
Day tickets for the Park & Ride into Cambridge are available and season tickets can be purchased to save money – a weekley season ticket for all P&R and Stagecoach buses in Cambridge will cost £22.00. Up to three children can travel free with each fare-paying passenger. For more information check the Cambridge Park & Ride website.
The nearest train station to Kingley Grove is located in Meldreth at only a 20-minute walk or five-minute cycle, with Thameslink Railway trains operating between London King’s Cross and Cambridge.
Meldreth Rail Station is staffed part-time and provides a basic level of passenger facilities including a ticket office, ticket machine, sheltered passenger seating, toilets, help points and a payphone. The station has 45 car parking spaces, two of which are accessible spaces. It costs roughly £6.20 for a week of parking at the station.
Train services operate half-hourly during weekday peak hours and hourly service during off-peak times. The journeys by rail from Meldreth to Cambridge and London King’s Cross take approximately 18 minutes and 70 minutes respectively and provide onward connections to a range of public transport services including rail, bus and underground services. Travelling by train is a great option if commuting to Cambridge. An ‘Anytime Return’ ticket to Cambridge from Meldreth costs £6.20, an off-peak return is £5.70 and discounts are available when purchasing season tickets (either weekly, monthly or annual). Tickets can be purchased either through the station ticket machine or online.
There are also 20 unsheltered cycle racks for bicycle storage at Meldreth Rail Station, which are covered by CCTV. Cycling from Kingley Grove to Meldreth train station only takes eight minutes, making ‘Cycle&Train’ a perfect option for leaving the car at home and turning your commute into a very sustainable way of travel. Also, Thameslink allows folding cycles on their trains at any time while regular cycles are allowed on any non-peak hour services, all free of charge. Rail User Group
