Personal Travel Planning, a ‘smoothie cycle’, a competition to win a bike and a £200 boost to a local hospice charity were some of the highlights of a Travel Plan event at Taylor Wimpey’s Knights Park in St Neots.
The leading local housebuilder has been working alongside SmarterTravel to provide residents with information about choosing alternative ways to get around instead of travelling by car.
Raymond Long, Travel Planner at SmarterTravel, says: “We are working on behalf of Taylor Wimpey East Anglia as the travel plan coordinators for the Knights Park development.†“We are working with them to manage, monitor and promote sustainable travel options for their residents.â€
The event took place to encourage people to find out more about long-term travel opportunities which are more economical and help promote healthier lifestyles. The sustainable travel options available in St Neots include regular local bus routes and excellent cycle paths to the town centre and train station, as well as methods that are potentially cost-saving, such as car sharing.
“The event was good for engaging community involvement, as we invited all residents at Knights Park to attend and get involved by developing their own personal travel plans.†“For each person who submitted a personal travel plan, Taylor Wimpey donated £5 to their nominated charity East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice (EACH) with the event raising a total of £200,†added Raymond.
When undertaking a personal travel plan, residents were given their personalised travel options to get to their primary destinations from Knights Park. Raymond continues: “Each resident who submitted a plan was also entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a brand new bicycle.†“Mr Fitzgerald who lives at Knights Park won the competition and has now been presented with his prize – a brand new bicycle!
“As well as being informative, the event was also good fun. “We had a good turnout at the event with approximately 50 people in attendance. They were also able to benefit from the bicycle surgery workshop, where residents could bring their bikes along and get them serviced free of charge.â€
Taylor Wimpey and SmarterTravel are planning to host another event in the summer of 2016 to ascertain any changes. This will be part of a long-term monitoring programme that will take place every year over a five-year period.
Raymond adds: “The Travel Plan event was part of Taylor Wimpey’s responsibility to form preliminary travel plans in order to receive approval for their planning application.†“The work we do aims to change people’s mindsets and promote smarter travel options.†Caroline Carter, Sales and Marketing Director for Taylor Wimpey East Anglia, says: “We are delighted to have received such an amazing response to our Travel Plan event at Knights Park.â€
“We would like to thank SmarterTravel for their hard work to make the day such a success and say congratulations to Mr Fitzgerald for winning the prize – we hope he enjoys his new bike!â€
